Yeşim Akdeniz

Yeşim Akdeniz (1978 Turkey) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1998-2002) and at deAteliers in Amsterdam (2002-2004). In 2005 she won the Bonner Kunstverein-Peter Mertes Prize.

Yeşim Akdeniz’s work has been exhibited in many institutions including Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam The Netherlands, Kunstverein Frankfurt Germany,MAK Museum Vienna,Sammlung Philara Düsseldorf Germany, Kunstverein Bielefeld Germany, Kunsthal Mechelen Belgium.

Yeşim Akdeniz's work is concerned with orientalism, gender and queer studies as well as cultural appropriation. Primarily focused on painting, her work is infused with symbolic narratives that can be read as signs of cultural production, negotiation and appropriation. Her most recent series of works combine autobiographical elements with (art)- historical narratives that position questions on identity formation along with ascriptions and self-attributions of objects as representations of political structures.
